Tougher air rules

A slight change in federal ozone standards could bump Maricopa County into the unhealthful range more often but may ultimately save billions of dollars and benefit public health. The Environmental Protection Agency introduced the new ozone standards Wednesday that administrators say are "the most stringent ever." (Arizona Republic)

Water worries rank high

A slight majority of Southern Arizonans who responded to a survey by the Arizona Daily Star trust that wastewater can be made safe to drink — although many don't want to drink it. Nearly three-quarters are willing to impose strict rules limiting outdoor water use, leading a county official to say those rules might not be politically feasible. (Arizona Daily Star)

Clean cars = dirty lake

Something as simple as a car wash has the potential to damage Lake Tahoe. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, vehicle wash water contains oil, grease, metal, phosphates, detergents, soaps, cleaners, road salts and other chemicals that can contaminate source water. Wash water also can contain the fine sediment identified by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board as a major contributor to Lake Tahoe's clarity loss. (Nevada Appeal)
